We transformed BSNL Surat Colony with 651 Native Trees Planted via Miyawaki Method
On 7th September, 2025, In a remarkable stride towards a greener and more sustainable Surat, the Grow Native Green Forum (GNGF), in collaboration with BSNL Surat-BA and the dedicated NGO Paridrishy, successfully planted 651 native tree saplings in the BSNL Surat Colony. Utilizing the innovative Miyawaki method, this initiative is a testament to the power of community collaboration in fostering urban green spaces, enhancing biodiversity, and combating the effects of urbanization like heat islands and air pollution. A Collaborative Effort for a Greener Tomorrow.

This plantation drive was a shining example of synergy between organizations with a shared vision. BSNL Surat-BA provided invaluable logistical support and access to the colony premises, ensuring a smooth execution of the project. Meanwhile, Paridrishy, a Surat-based NGO committed to environmental and social causes, brought their expertise in community mobilization and environmental stewardship, rallying volunteers and amplifying the impact of the event. Together, our organizations transformed a patch of urban land into the foundation of a thriving mini-forest.
The Journey: From Nursery to New Forest
The groundwork for this green milestone began on Saturday, September 6, 2025, when volunteers from GNGF, BSNL Surat-BA, and Paridrishy gathered at 7 AM at the Toran Vatika Nursery. With enthusiasm and purpose, the team carefully selected and loaded 651 native tree saplings—including species like neem, peepal, banyan, and jamun—into a tempo truck. These species were chosen for their adaptability to Surat’s climate and their ability to support local ecosystems, providing shade, oxygen, and habitats for birds and insects.
The main event unfolded on Sunday, September 7, 2025, starting at 7 AM at the BSNL Surat Colony. Volunteers worked tirelessly, beginning with the creation of pit-holes across the site. Each pit was enriched with a nutrient-dense blend of vermicompost and cocopeat, creating an optimal environment for root growth. Following the Miyawaki method’s principle of dense planting, the saplings were positioned just 2 feet apart, fostering rapid canopy development and mutual support among the trees. Each sapling was secured to a bamboo stick for stability, ensuring resilience against wind and other elements. By 10 AM, the plantation was complete followed by Tea and Breakfast.
The journey began on Saturday, September 6, 2025, when our team gathered bright and early at 7 AM at the Toran Vatika Nursery. With enthusiasm in the air, volunteers loaded the carefully selected native tree saplings into a tempo truck. This preparatory step ensured everything was ready for the main event, allowing us to focus on efficient execution the following day.

On Sunday morning, starting at 7 AM, the real transformation unfolded at BSNL Surat Colony. We kicked off by meticulously creating pit-holes across the designated area. Each pit was then enriched with a nutrient-packed mix of vermicompost and cocopeat, providing the ideal foundation for the young saplings to thrive. Following the principles of the Miyawaki method—which emphasizes dense planting of native species to accelerate forest growth—we positioned the trees just 2 feet apart. This close spacing encourages rapid canopy formation and mutual support among the plants.
By 10 AM, the plantation was complete. To ensure the saplings’ stability against wind and other elements, we fitted bamboo sticks beside each one and securely tied the plants for added support. The result? A burgeoning mini-forest that promises to mature into a lush, self-sustaining ecosystem in just a few years.

The Miyawaki Method: A Game-Changer for Urban Greening
Developed by Japanese botanist Dr. Akira Miyawaki, the Miyawaki method is a revolutionary approach to afforestation. By planting a diverse mix of native species in close proximity, this technique creates forests that grow 10 times faster, are 30 times denser, and support 100 times more biodiversity than conventional plantations. In urban settings like Surat, where space is limited and environmental challenges are intensifying, this method is a game-changer. The dense mini-forest at BSNL Surat Colony will not only sequester carbon and purify the air but also create a cooling effect, making the area more livable for residents.
Why Native Trees Matter
At GNGF, our focus on native trees is deliberate. Species like neem, peepal, and banyan are deeply rooted in Surat’s ecosystem, requiring minimal maintenance while offering maximum ecological benefits. These trees attract local pollinators, provide shade, and improve soil health, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. By choosing native species, we ensure that our efforts align with the natural heritage of the region, fostering a healthier environment for both people and wildlife.
A Community-Driven Success
The success of this plantation drive owes much to the collective efforts of our volunteers, the leadership of BSNL Surat-BA, and the passionate involvement of Paridrishy. Residents of BSNL Surat Colony also played a crucial role, offering their support and enthusiasm for a greener community. This project underscores the importance of partnerships in achieving meaningful environmental change.
Looking Ahead: Join the Green Revolution
The 651 trees planted today are just the beginning. At Grow Native Green Forum, we are committed to transforming Surat into a greener, more sustainable city, one sapling at a time. Our collaboration with BSNL Surat-BA and Paridrishy sets a powerful precedent for future initiatives, and we’re already planning our next plantation drives to expand Surat’s urban canopy.
